San Marcos is full of artistic, creative people. On the second Saturday of each month through December, grab the kids, grab the dogs, and head downtown! Stroll among juried artists and makers at Art Squared Arts Market, which takes place in front of Hays County Courthouse.
What You’ll Find at Art Squared
Since 2014, Art Squared has brought several Hill Country artists together in a festive setting. The event offers arts and crafts for kids, live music, a monthly featured artist, and nonprofit beneficiaries. The group also hosts a quarterly art supply swap from May through December.
View art on sale during Art Squared. The tented booths showcase handmade items including painting, wood carving, furniture, glassworks, ceramics, soaps and lotions, and jewelry.
Life in an RV tends to be minimalistic, but bringing a pice of art into your home on wheels helps personalize it. Maybe it’s time for a new coffee cup or necklace. Perhaps you want a toy for the kids or a plant to nurture.
You might even find a cigar box guitar to take up playing! Even if you aren’t in the market for gifts or a new treasure, Art Squared is still a fun way to spend the day browsing. Kids can participate in free, hands-on art activities like drawing, painting, or making masks or paper roses.
As one Facebook review says, “The artists have amazing pieces…everyone is so friendly, and the square is fun to walk around afterward. The farmers market is right next to it…to pick up some local coffee, a tomato plant, organic tamales …All around a good time!”
Art Squared features a different local nonprofit each month. Recent nonprofits include worthy organizations such as CASA of Central Texas, a volunteer advocacy program for children in foster care.
Live music makes any event more exciting, and Art Squared hosts live music each month. Show off your salsa steps, practice your two-step, or hum along to popular favorites. Every month is different. You may even be able to join a free yoga or free tai chi class at Art Squared.
Check out the event website or Facebook page for announcements on featured artists, charities, and bands. The market is also home to special events throughout the year, from BubbleFest, to food drives, to festivities for holidays such as Veteran’s Day and Christmas.
San Marcos Art League
San Marcos Art League organizes Art Squared. The league is the oldest arts-based organization in San Marcos, Texas, with a decades-long history of nurturing and promoting the arts in our local area.
The league has a hand in the monthly Art Squared markets and the city-wide, 15-day-long Mermaid Art Market each fall. San Marcos Art League encourages and promotes local art galleries and events year-round.
One way the league does this is through offering classes teaching artists the business of art, for example, promotion on social media. Sponsored by local businesses, membership fees, and partners, San Marcos Art League is a true community effort.
Next time you are in San Marcos on a second Saturday, it’s worth a quick drive downtown to hit the Art Squared Arts Market. Browse art booths, listen to live music, and people-watch with locals and tourists on a beautiful day in the heart of our city.
