Our RV campground is located near a wide range of beautiful public land. As we gear up for summer vacation season, you can expect a variety of educational and entertaining programming to choose from. Here are 10 Texas state park events in June that we’re especially excited about! They’re perfect day trip ideas while you’re staying at Pecan Park Riverside RV Park, which is centrally located in San Marcos, Texas.
1/ Lockhart State Park at Chisholm Trail Roundup
While the annual Chisholm Trail Roundup doesn’t take place at the state park, Lockhart State Park will have a booth with activities like ancient spear throwing and fishing rod casting. The Chisholm Trail Roundup as a whole is a don’t-miss event, so you’ll find lots to do.
2/ LBJ Annual Archery Clinics
Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site will be teaching archery basics on four different dates in June. Equipment is provided, but participants must be at least seven years old. While you’re there, take a tour of the Texas White House on President Johnson’s ranch.
3/ Life in the Civilian Conservation Corps at Buescher State Park
The Civilian Conservation Corps was responsible for building many of the public park roads, buildings, and campgrounds across our country during the Great Depression. This hour-long tour “digs” into the legacy these hard-working men left at Buescher State Park.
4/ Finding Feathered Friends – Beginner Bird Hike at McKinney Falls State Park
On this bird hike at Austin’s state park, you’ll learn how to identify feathered friends by sight and sound. Bring binoculars, drinking water, and closed-toed shoes. You may hike across the falls, so wear shoes that can get wet. We recommend you arrive early with a picnic dinner. You can even take a dip in the falls to cool down!
5/ Open House at Lockhart State Park
Visit Lockhart State Park for free! The day will be full of fun activities, like trail riding (advance registration required), zombie apocalypse hike, Dutch oven cooking class, snake encounter, fishing fest, and creatures of the night hike!
6/ River Critters – Exploration Station at McKinney Falls State Park
All ages are welcome for this interesting event. A master naturalist will introduce the tiny river creatures in Austin’s Onion Creek. Wear clothing that can get wet.
7/ Geocaching 101 at Guadalupe River State Park
If you’ve never been geocaching, then don’t miss this introductory event! It’s such a fun family activity as you travel all over with your RV. At Guadalupe River State Park, you’ll learn how to use a GPS unit, then go out into the park to test your new skills. Email ahead to reserve your unit (information at website link above).
8/ Sunday Afternoon Ranger Walk at Palmetto State Park
Palmetto State Park is a shady haven in the Texas summer heat. This guided hike will cover one to three miles as you learn about flora and fauna in the area. All ages will enjoy!
9/ Citizen Science – Frog Walk at Palmetto State Park
Now here’s something you don’t get to do every day. Partner with the San Antonio Zoo to do an informal frog species survey in Palmetto State Park. After a brief training session, you’ll head into Ottine Swamp. Bring drinking water and closed-toe shoes.
10/ Summit Hike at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area
While Enchanted Rock may not be a state park, it’s well worth the drive from Pecan Park. This morning event is a guide hike, but you can visit any time to hike Enchanted Rock. Morning is a good time to visit, before the heat of the day really hits.
